Coupon question.....?

Can you combine two of the same coupons? For example if i were to have a $1.00 off coupon and another $1.00 off coupon,both for a $3.00 toothpaste,if i were too put them together,would i only have too pay $1.00?Or does it not work that way?Thank you for your answers
